Disney surpasses Netflix in growth creating ‘A Whole New Streaming World’ for subscribers

It’s 8pm at night. You are restless and hungry and yearning for a way to escape into a world of storytelling. You casually turn on the television and scroll through apps. Strategically placed next to each other are Netflix, Disney, ESPN, Hulu, Paramount plus and more. Out of all of these streaming services the app you click through is Disney +. You make your way to the kitchen, pour yourself a bottle of wine and place a microwaveable popcorn bag in the microwave to accompany you for this retreat into stories.

Out of all the content and streaming services why Disney? Because Disney continues to capture the hearts of people through dreams, excitement, hope and enchantment. Disney continues to innovate and tug at the hearts of what people truly want – which is purpose and lifelong dreams fulfilled. Endless times they have successfully retold these types of stories through boy meets girl and eventually boy gets girl, child has a wish and soon wish comes true, and more. Disney thrives on utilizing the basic elements of storytelling while tugging at people’s heartstrings.

Bob Igor the predecessor of Bob Chapek also had dreams and hopes and wishes for fifteen years as chief executive officer of Walt Disney Company. In those fifteen years he has taken the corporation to newer heights to a market capitalization of $257 billion acquiring a massive portfolio of intellectual property including Pixar, Marvel entertainment, 21st Century Fox, Lucasfilm and Nat Geo. Not to mention he greenlit the production of Black Panther.

So, why has Disney surpassed Netflix, which once was the benchmark in the streaming world? One word – innovation. Netflix continues to maintain its relevancy with Netflix originals occasionally. But in the world of this digital Era, you must continue to innovate. What was once hot early on this year is now old news in the middle of the year.

I was given the opportunity of going to Disney World twice this year as a media representative and each time I felt like a kid at heart. Disney allows us to feel something through the stories they share. And with each streaming service that continues to provide content, you must do the same.
